Symptoms of Eating Disorders That You Should Pay Attention to Before It’s Too Late
Are you obsessed with eating healthy?
Eating healthy is the right thing to do, but being obsessed about it might not benefit the long run. While you may want to cut out fats completely, in reality, your body needs everything from carbohydrates to fats. And until you’re advised to have a restricted diet by a healthcare provider, you should avoid being a miser about including rich substances in your palette.
Talking about obsession around food, did you know that over-restricted eating can lead to an eating disorder? What’s more, the symptoms of an eating disorder are so meager that they can be easily overlooked. Eating disorders can result in serious complications for your body over time, and if you’re suffering from such an issue, you should try and control it before you start suffering permanent damages.
Allow us to make you aware of certain symptoms of eating disorders that often go unnoticed.

Dry and blotchy skin
You might never have thought that your dry skin may be the consequence of an underlying eating disorder. Excessive use of laxatives and frequent purging causes severe dehydration, which can lead to very dry skin.
You may also notice other signs like sunken cheeks and eyeballs. Another telltale sign of eating disorders, specifically bulimia, is the appearance of calluses on the knuckles. These are caused when a person repeatedly scraps the back of their hand against their teeth to induce vomiting.
Soft and downy body hair
When you deprive yourself of nutrition for a long period, your body starts developing fine hair on the arms and other parts. This way the body tries to adapt to the loss of fat and perilously low body weight. This hair, an almost thin film of fur, is termed lanugo and is seen in people with anorexia. Experts believe it to be a sign of starvation and the body’s attempt to keep itself warm.
Feeling self-conscious while eating in public
People who are overly concerned about their image feel shy about eating in public. They think that others will judge them if they see them eating. For people with eating disorders, eating can be immensely anxiety-provoking, and doing it in public just adds to the task’s enormity.
Not wishing to have food when surrounded by people is a hallmark sign of anorexia. That being said, it can be seen in every eating disorder. Even in binge eating disorder, people will eat very little in public but will then binge when alone.
